Fattoria Bacio, Certaldo, Italy
with
Robyn Avalon, Karin Boskens, & Susanne Fromm
This
retreat is held at a charming 17 th century working villa nestled in
the rolling Chianti hills of Tuscany, amidst the smells of newly
harvested grapes, the tastes of Italy's finest foods, and a view that
belongs on canvas. It is an extraordinary opportunity to explore,
firsthand, the art of traditional Tuscan cooking, while learning how to
prevent the pain, tension and fatigue often associated with food
preparation.
Begin your day with Tai Chi classes overlooking rows and rows of grapes draping heavily from the vines, a brief, brisk walk through the vineyards, followed by a simple Italian breakfast. Morning classes will include practical, hands-on study in the principles of coordination, movement, habit, and awareness, based on the work of F. M. Alexander. Students will learn how to recognize and change the habits that cause unnecessary pain, tension, and fatigue - habits that reduce sensory awareness and limit our ability to fully enjoy culinary arts.
After
a light refreshing lunch and the traditional siesta (perhaps followed
by a swim in the Villa pool), our afternoons will be spent in the
kitchen, learning traditional Tuscan recipes, as we prepare a different
sumptuous Tuscan meal for each evening, complete with wines from the
Villa's own vineyards. Hands-on assistance throughout our
cooking process will allow students to integrate and implement new ways
of working - without the habitual stress and effort usually
associated with repetitive actions. The week also offers
opportunities for grocery shopping at the local market, luxurious walks
through the famous Chianti hills, swimming, local sightseeing, and, of
course, enjoying fabulous food!
This workshop is open to all those interested in Alexander's Work or Tuscan cooking. While no previous Alexander experience is necessary, Alexander teachers and students will have an opportunity to compliment their skills for working in practical activities. Classes will address the needs of participants at every level of culinary and Alexander experience. Participants will receive copies of recipes used in the workshop to compliment their hands-on experience.
