Tuition & Certification Policy
Tuition
The AASW Teacher Training program is a commitment of 20 Training Events, usually done over 3 years of fulltime study. Each year is divided into six 7 – 10 day intensives, held in New Mexico. Students are encouraged to study at another training program or Event once each year as well, which can count as a Training Event upon approval of the AASW Director. The tuition is $6000 per year, payable in three installments/year for each year of training. Payments are due on Jan 15th, May 1st, and September 1st each year. Students may enroll in the program at any time of year; payments will be prorated until they are on the above payment schedule. Payments occurring during a training period may be hand delivered. Other payments should be made out to AASW and mailed to Robyn Avalon, PO Box 124, Coyote, NM 87012.
Students may enroll either full-time or part-time or design their own program. Full-time status requires attendance at 4 out of 6 Events each year. Part-time status requires either full attendance at 3 out of 6 Events, or half time attendance at all 6 Events. Self-designed programs must be submitted in writing and pre-approved by the AASW Director prior to beginning the program. Part-time attendance is $3000/year.
For each year of study, students are asked to make a one year commitment, both in attendance and tuition. At the end of each year, each student will have a review meeting with the AASW Director to determine if the design of their program is working well for them, and to evaluate their progress. If changes need to be made in the program, or additional study is recommended before continuing to the next level of material, such changes will be agreed upon and put in writing. Students wishing to withdraw from the program must do so in writing one month prior to their next Event. Tuition will be prorated for intensives not yet attended.
In the event of missed Events, tuition will not be prorated or refunded.
Tuition payments remain due on the above schedule. Missed Events can be made up at any Alliance school or added on at the end of the regular training period.
Certification
Students are issued Certificates of Graduation upon 1) completion of the 20 events, 2) payment in full received, and 3) after having passed a Graduation Evaluation by Alliance Directors. All students with a Certificate of Graduation from an Alexander Teacher Training Program may teach the Work. Some states require all practitioners using hands-on contact to have additional licensing – please check your state regulations. If graduates wish to join Alexander professional organizations, they may do so upon graduation. Please note: these organizations do not “certify” you to teach, nor are they necessary for you to legally present yourself as an Alexander Teacher. They are professional organizations designed to support the continued visibility of the Alexander Technique worldwide.
Apprenticeship
There is the option of a fourth year teaching apprenticeship, available to AASW graduates who have completed all 20 Events and are paid in full. This apprenticeship is at no additional cost to AASW graduates. Other Alliance and non-Alliance graduates may enroll in the full apprenticeship program for $1500 for the year.
International Exchange Program
The entire time you are a full-time Alliance student, you can study at any of the Alliance schools worldwide (Japan, Germany, Toronto, Philadelphia, Alaska) with no additional tuition cost. Thus, students may make up missed Events at any of the other Alliance Schools. Other Alliance students may also make up Events at AASW within the calendar year following their three years of training. Students must complete all 20 Events before receiving a certificate of completion, and being eligible for the apprenticeship program.
