THE MAKER AND THE MAKING
A SELF-HELP WORKSHOP FOR FIBER ARTISTS & CRAFTSPEOPLE
EXPLORING BODY USE, AWARENESS, AND CREATIVE PROCESS
AUGUST 12 - 14, 2005
SANTA FE, NM $250
Led by
MARTHA HANSEN FERTMAN — Co-Founder, Alexander Alliance / Spinner, Knitter
TED HALLMAN — Alexander Teacher / Internationally Acclaimed Fiber Artist
ROBYN AVALON — Director, Alexander Alliance Southwest / Craftswoman

In this workshop we will explore ways to honor our bodies as we make our art, bringing ease, dignity, and less stress into our creative process. Using the Alexander Technique, we will study basic movements of crafts and fiber arts, including stitching, spinning, weaving, knitting, cutting, basketry, wrapping and collage. You will have the opportunity to notice how you are working, while you are working, thus beginning to understand how you can transform excessive tension, effort and fatigue into ease, grace, and energy.
You are invited to bring works in progress from any medium, and no previous fiber arts experience is necessary. Discover how our qualities of consciousness and personal use are reflected in our creative process and, ultimately, in our art.

During this 3-day intensive, you will receive specific, hands-on kinesthetic information while you are actually engaged in the process of making art. You will learn how to recognize the habits that ultimately lead to discomfort and stress. You will learn some basic tools for helping yourself while you are working on your own. Each participant will receive individual attention, as well as group lessons. There will also be opportunities to enjoy the local artisans of Northern New Mexico.

IF YOU LOVE MAKING ART,
BUT NOT THE TOLL IT TAKES ON YOUR BODY,
THIS IS THE WORKSHOP FOR YOU.
